Romania’s Enescu festival included among most important classical music festivals in Europe

26 July 2011

The International Festival "George Enescu" held in Bucharest has been included among the most important classical music festivals around Europe this summer by the British newspaper "The Independent".

“Its biennial George Enescu Festival, named after the country's most celebrated composer, is immensely ambitious, bringing to Bucharest some of the world's finest orchestras and soloists”, writes The Independent. “The city, the 19th century's "Paris of the East", emerged poverty-stricken and desolate from the Ceausescu era. Now it is reinventing itself as a major modern metropolis for eastern Europe”, the newspaper goes on.

The Independent also included in the "galaxy of virtuosi" the festivals in Bayreuth, Germany, in Verbier, Switzerland, in Aix-en-Provence and Saint-Denis, France. You can find the entire article here.

The George Enescu Festival, which takes place every two years, was established in 1958 as a sign of recognition of Enescu’s genius and as homage to the great Romanian composer’s life and creation. This year, Enescu festival will be held between September 1 and September 25. Read more on the official website here.
