Romania’s Halep reaches Dubai tennis championship final after defeating Caroline Wozniacki

20 February 2015

Romania’s tennis star Simona Halep managed to beat Danish player Caroline Wozniacki in the Dubai Duty Free tennis championship semifinals, and advances to the final. Halep, number 4 WTA, faced Wozniacki, number 5 WTA, in a match which lasted about an hour and a half.

In tomorrow’s final in Doha, Halep, first runner up for the title, will face Karolina Pliskova for the first time. Pliskova won against Garbine Muguruza, 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in a match on Friday afternoon (February 20), just before the Halep – Wozniacki match. This will be Simona's 16th final, and her first Dubai championship final.

Wozniacki won the first set 2-6, after a weak start for the Romanian, but Halep managed to catch up and breezed through the second set, which she won 6-1, and then through the third, which ended 6-1.

It was the third time the two played against each other. Each of them won a match so far: Wozniacki in 2013, and Halep in 2014.

Halep made it to the Doha semifinals after beating Ekaterina Makarova, 6-3, 1-6, 7-5, in a two-hour match.

The final in Dubai will take place on Saturday, February 21, after 5 PM Romania time, after the doubles final.
