Romania’s high altitude road Transfagarasan reopens for summer traffic
Romania’s mountain road Transfagarasan is opened to traffic between July 1 and October 31, between Bascov in Arges county and the intersection with DN1 Brasov-Sibiu, according to the national highways authority CNADNR.
Drivers are asked to follow the existing road signs, as there are restrictions and dangerous regions on this route.
According to CNADNR’s announcement, on the road section between km 104 and km 130 (Balea Cascada), traffic is forbidden during night time, between 21:00 and 7:00.
The Transfagarasan road was built on the orders of Communist era dictator Nicolae Ceausescu between 1970 and 1974 to ensure a military strategic route through the mountains. It includes Romania’s longest road tunnel (887 meters).
It stays open only four months a year, due to the high altitude.
