Romania’s High Court rules car towing illegal
Romania’s High Court recently ruled that local authorities have no right to decide on towing illegally parked cars. According to the court, only the Government can issue a regulation on this matter.
Towing illegally parked cars was a very profitable business for local authorities as well as for some private companies.
In Bucharest, each district had a contract with a different car towing company that would split the fine paid by the car owners with the local authorities.
The Bucharest Court has decided that car towing was illegal in some of Bucharest’s districts, but there was no uniform ruling. This is why the ombudsman asked the High Court to make a decision that would apply in all cases.
