Romania’s inflation rate down to a historic low in January

Romania’s annual inflation rate in January 2012 went down to 2.72 percent, a new historic low, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS). In December 2011, the inflation rate was 3.14 percent.

Fruits, vegetables and cheese recorded the highest price increase, while eggs, potatoes and flour saw the biggest drops in price.

Romania’s inflation stood at close to 3 percent in the fourth quarter of last year, in line with Central Bank estimates, while the target for 2012 was increased to 3.2 percent, from a previous figure of 3 percent. A 3 percent inflation rate is projected for 2013, according to the Romanian Central Bank.
