Minister: Romania's IT infrastucture is used for spreading computer viruses worldwide

28 March 2016

The modern IT infrastructure in Romania is used for spreading computer viruses all over the world, the country ranking high from this point of view, according to communications minister Marius Bostan.

Romania has one of the fastest IT infrastructures in the world, which is not always used for good purposes. "Romania ranks high on spreading viruses worldwide. The modern infrastructure in the country is used for this purpose, which generates serious problems in other states. This is why we need clear regulations for cyber security," Bostan said at the WeLoveDigital Forum organised by local Profit.ro.

Early this year, the Ministry of Communications has put up for public debate a new draft law on cyber security, after several other normative acts proposed before, known as the "Big Brother laws", have been considered unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court.

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos recently said that Romania needed a new law on cyber security that would even allow registering the people who buy prepaid phone cards. Ciolos argued that the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) had complained that it couldn't keep track of the prepaid card users, which apparently had even been used to prepare attacks in the European Union.
