Romania’s jobless rate falls to lowest level since mid-2009

The number of unemployed dropped by some 12,000 in January this year compared to December 2015 and the jobless rate went down to 6.5%.

An unemployment rate of 6.5%, calculated according to the methodology of the International Labour Office, hasn’t been registered since May-June 2009, according to the statistical series of the National Statistics Institute (INS), reports local News.ro.

The number of unemployed aged 15-74 amounted to 604,000 in January 2016, down from 616,000 in December and 630,000 in January 2015.

In terms of gender, the jobless rate among men (7.1%) was higher than the one among women (5.8%), according to INS data.

The unemployed aged 25-74 represent 77.3% of the total number of jobless people estimated for January.
