Romania's largest online shop eMag enters petshop niche

05 September 2013

The largest Romanian online shop eMag.ro has added yet another segment of products it offers: food and accessories for pets.

The retailer, which started off by selling IT&C and home appliances, has been expanding its product base in recent years, by adding books, cosmetics, insurances, do-it-yourself products and tourist services, among others.

Its newly launched online pet shop provides food and accessories for pets, which can be delivered the same day in Bucharest and next day across Romania.

The retailer hopes to see a growing trend on the online market for pet products, similarly to the US, where 21 percent of the consumers buy food and accessories for their pets online.

The online sales of products for pets were up 76 percent in the last three years in the US, according to eMag.ro, which quoted an EY study.

Romania's eMag, majority owned by South Africa-based media group Naspers, recently started operations in Hungary. eMag, launched 12 years ago, posted a turnover of EUR 145 million in 2011, making it the largest online retailer in Romania.
