Romania’s mountain road Transalpina is opened for traffic, minister says

14 July 2014

Romania’s high-altitude road Transalpina is opened for traffic, according to Transport Minister Ioan Rus. However, he said the road has the “under construction” status, so the necessary restrictions should apply.

“Transalpina is much like an orphan. I mean, the National Roads Company CNADNR hasn’t taken it over from the construction company, the company is bankrupt or something like that, an insolvency company took it over, after the first insolvency company dropped out, [...] so Transalpina is like an orphan, for which we are currently trying to find a solution. That’s the truth,” said the minister, quoted by local news agency Agerpres.

The roads authority CNADNR announced few days earlier that the traffic on Transalpina is opened only between Bengesti and Ranca, while the Ranca-Sebes section is closed throughout the year because work hasn’t been yet completed there.

Also, CNADNR announced that is currently evaluating the upgrading work carried out by Romstrade on Transalpina, in order to terminate the contract, and it will also go to court to recover the damages, reports Agerpres.

At an altitude of 2,145 meters, DN67C, also known as Transalpina, is the highest altitude road in Romania. The other high altitude road in Romania is Transfagarasan.

Non-existent work on Romania’s Transalpina highway brings another indictment for local ‘Asphalt King’.
