Romania’s National Arena to become shelter in case of war or calamities

30 September 2014

Bucharest’s municipality will turn the National Arena, Romania’s largest football stadium, into a modern shelter that will be able to host a few thousand people in case of war or natural disasters. The municipality will spend more than EUR 1 million to buy equipment for this shelter, according to local newspaper Adevarul.

Local authorities will buy, among others, 3,000 metal food pots, for which it is willing to pay EUR 175,000, for which it already launched a public auction. They will also buy 12,600 camp beds, for an estimated EUR 900,000. The equipment will be stored at the stadium immediately after purchase. Blankets will also be bought for user during such emergencies.

The municipality’s representatives said that these acquisitions are made according to a law from 2004 which regulates the procedures for civil protection. Under the same directives, several schools in Bucharest have been equipped with generators, camp beds, flashlights, stretchers and blankets. Deep wells will also be drilled at these schools to supply them with fresh water. The 12 schools will be able to host some 4,500 people in their sports halls.
