Romania’s newspapers in free-fall as print sales tank

08 September 2016

Romania’s top national daily newspapers recorded significant drops in the number of copies sold in April-June 2016 compared to the same period of 2015.

Tabloids Click and Libertatea remained the top-selling daily newspapers in Romania, but both recorded significant drops in sales, according to data released by BRAT, the organization that monitors the local newspapers' circulation and the online publications' traffic.

Click, which is part of Adevarul Holding, sold some 86,600 copies on average per edition between April and June, down by 13,500 compared to the same period of 2015. Libertatea’s sales also dropped by some 12,800 copies per edition, to 49,700 copies. Libertatea is part of Ringier Group.

Sports newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor remains third in terms of sales, with 22,100 copies per day, down by 2,000 year-on-year.

Evenimentul Zilei, the top-selling quality newspaper in Romania, sold close to 11,000 copies per edition, down by 1,300.

Ziarul Financiar, the main business newspaper in Romania, saw its sales drop under 5,000 copies per edition, from over 6,600 in April-June 2015.

The print newspapers’ sales have been dropping constantly in recent years as most Romanians prefer reading their news online. Some regional or local newspapers are doing a bit better and even have higher sales figures compared to national newspapers.
