Romania's President asks Intelligence Service to check PM’s statements
Changes to the Forestry Code and the illegal logging scandal have sparked quarrel between Romania’s President and Prime Minister, after a relatively quiet period.
President Klaus Iohannis asked the head of Romania’s Intelligence Service to check some statements made by Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
The PM had recently said on a TV show that he had information from the Intelligence Service that people from the President’s entourage met with timber processing companies.
These statements are very serious, and if not proved right, the Prime Minister must answer for his statements, said the President. He added he won’t tolerate false statements anymore, such as those made during the presidential campaign.
National Liberal Party Leaders also met with representatives of Austrian timber producer Holzindustrie Schweighofer to discuss the Forestry Code amendment project, the PM, who is the head of the Social Democrat Party, also added. They later misinformed the President, he claimed.
