Romania’s Simona Halep wins Indian Wells tennis tournament
Romanian tennis star Simona Halep won the Indian Wells tennis tournament after a long final with Serbian Jelena Jankovic. This is her third title this year and the 11th of her career.
Halep managed to make a strong comeback and beat Jankovic in three sets, ended 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. The match was a battle that lasted more than two and a half hours.
Simona Halep, 23, made it to the final after getting past Czech Karolina Pliskova and Spain’s Carla Suarez Navarro. In the semifinals she was supposed to play against the world’s number one player, Serena Williams, but the American star retired due to an injury.
The victory in Indian Wells brings Simona Halep a check for USD 900,000 and 1,000 WTA points. This should bring the Romanian closer to the second spot in the WTA ranking.
