The tax revenues collected to the Romanian state budget are among the lowest in the European Union when compared to the local GDP. The ration of these revenues was of 28 percent out of GDP in 2009, while the EU average where close to 40 percent, according to Eurostat. Romania's tax rates are not among the lowest in the region, but its collection lags behind other EU states.

Denmark and Sweden, which have among the highest taxes in the EU, are also the champions in terms of tax collection in the Union, 48.2 percent and 47.1 percent of their GDP, respectively. Bulgaria managed to collect taxes worth 33.3 percent of its GDP in 2008, while the Czech republic, 36.1 percent. Hungary's tax collection was of 40.4 percent of its GDP in 2008, while it Poland it was of 34.3 percent.
