Romania’s trade deficit widens as imports outgrow exports
Romania’s goods exports increased by 5.4% in the first eight months of 2015 compared to the same period of last year, reaching EUR 34.2 billion. The imports went up by 7.4% in the same period, to EUR 40.8 billion.
The goods trade deficit thus widened by a quarter (almost EUR 1 billion) compared to the first eight months of 2014, reaching EUR 4.8 billion.
In August, the goods exports went up by only 1.5% compared to the same month last year, to EUR 3.92 billion, while imports increased by almost 11%, to EUR 4.8 billion. The trade deficit almost doubled, to EUR 860 million, the highest monthly value this year.
Romania’s biggest exports in the first eight months were cars and car parts, representing 43.7% of the total goods exports. Chemicals and fuels accounted for 5.1% of the exports each while food, beverages and tobacco had an 8.7% share.
Cars and automotive also had the highest share in imports, 36.5%, followed by chemicals (14%), and food products (8.2%).
