Romania’s Transfagarasan mountain road reopens for traffic
Romania’s national highways authority CNADNR has announced that the high altitude road Transfagarasan is opened to traffic between July 1 and October 31, 2013, between Bascov in Arges county and the intersection with DN 1 Brasov-Sibiu.
Drivers are asked to follow the existing road signs, given that there are restrictions and dangerous spots on this route, reads the announcement. The road section between km 56 +600 and km 130 +800 (Balea) the traffic is forbidden during night time, between 21:00 and 7:00.
The spectacular Transfagarasan road was built on the orders of Communist era dictator Nicolae Ceausescu between 1970 and 1974 to ensure a military strategic route through the mountains. It includes Romania’s longest road tunnel (887 meters). The iconic road featured in the popular British motoring television show Top Gear.
