Romania's Transport Ministry gives Moara Vlasiei – Ploiesti highway contract back to initial constructors

25 May 2011

Romania's Transport Ministry has changed its mind about canceling the contract for the Moara Vlasiei – Ploiesti highway contract, after having announced Romanian construction companies Spedition UMB, Tehnostrade, Euroconstruct Trading '98 and PA&CO International in April that the contract would be canceled.

“The conditions to end the cancellation procedures were for these companies to finish works and not ask for extra money. Spedition UMB was the first to officially let us know it gave up on all the extra costs,” according to Anca Boagiu, the Romanian Transport Ministry, quoted by Romanian media.

Romania’s Transport Ministry notified in April this year several local construction companies, which were working on the Moara Vlasiei- Ploiesti highway segment that the contract for the project would be canceled. This was triggered by the construction companies having left the site and having asked for a 47 percent hike in price, according to Transport Minister Anca Boagiu.

New companies to work on this highway segment were to be chosen in August this year. This was the second such cancellation after a similar move for the Cernavoda- Medgidia highway segment. In that case, French construction company Colas was notified about the contract cancellation for the highway segment – Cernavoda – Medgidia.
