Romania's two car makers hit record car production locally

The two largest car makers in Romania – the French – owned Automobile Dacia and Ford Romania together produced a little over 320,000 cars in 2012 in Romania, up 5 percent on the previous year, according to data from the Association of Car producers and Importers (APIA). This was the highest level achieved by the local car industry so far.

The value of the Romanian passenger car production last year was of EUR 3.8 billion, according to estimations by Romanian daily Ziarul Financiar. Last year, Ford started producing B-Max models at its factory in Craiova, with over 30,000 cars assembled locally.

In 2011, Romania produced 310,000 passenger cars, according to data from the European Car Manufacturers Association. This was higher than in Hungary – 200,000 cars- but lower than in Poland – 740,0000 cars. Romania only has two car plants, while Hungary has four. In Poland there are 11 car plants.
