Romania's current account deficit down 73% in January, FDI plummet

The balance of payments’ current account deficit in Romania was of EUR 37 million in January 2012, down 73.4 percent than the same period in 2011, mainly due to higher surplus in current transfer and the decrease in income deficit, according to the country’s Central Bank (BNR).

The direct investments made by foreigners stood at Romania was EUR 23 million and covered 62.2 percent of the current account deficit. In January 2011, the foreign direct investments in Romania stood at EUR 376 million.

Romania’s total external debt was of EUR 97.3 billion at the end of January this year, down from EUR 98.6 billion reported at the end of the same month in 2011, according to BNR.

The medium and long-term external debt was EUR 75.1 billion - 77.2 percent of the total, while the short-term external debt was EUR 22 billion, down 3.4 percent from end-2011.
