Romania's Water Administration says no immediate risk of floods after heavy snowfall

16 February 2012

Romania is not in imminent danger of flooding, the country's Waters Administration announced. Water levels in lakes are currently only half their maximum level, so melting snow in the coming weeks should not cause floods. The drought  the country experienced earlier this year has left  lakes and rivers below their normal level for this time of the year.

Romania is still under a thick layer of snow, in some areas reaching a couple of meters high, after facing one of its worst winters in modern history. Tens of thousands of people in the south and southeast of the country were snow-bound, and authorities are still struggling to reach all the isolated villages. The local media, private individuals, companies and state authorities have collected for emergency relief of those in need and shipments have already been sent to some of the worst hit villages.

Romania was under Orange and Yellow codes for snow, blizzards and low temperatures in the last two weeks. Meteorologists predict slightly higher temperatures during the coming week-end, but while night time temperatures stay low, the snow is likely to remain.
