Russians promise reply to new U.S. military base in Romania

14 October 2014

Russia will take measures in reply to the transfer of a new military base in Romania to U.S. command, Aleksandr Grushko, Russia’s representative to NATO, has said. He also blamed the United States for undermining regional security in Europe by pressing for the new missile defense system.

“The United States is gradually implementing its Euro Missile Defense program. They either do not consider the regional security interests or plainly ignore them,” Interfax news agency quoted Grushko as saying, according to Russia Today.

The Russian officials’ statement comes just days after the U.S. navy took control of the new military base in Deveselu, in South-Western Romania, where an important component of its anti-missile defense system will be located. The military base at Deveselu is expected to be fully operational in late 2015.
