Famous Dacian fortress in Romania will be closed for a month for restoration

26 September 2017

The Dacian fortress Sarmizegetusa Regia, in Central Romania, will be closed to the public for one month for restoration and maintenance works, according to the Hunedoara County Council.

The site will stay closed between October 2 and October 31. This means that tourists can’t visit the fortress in this period, being advised to reschedule any visits they have planned.

“The decision to close the site is aimed at avoiding accidents, coming in response to requests submitted by the Scientific Council of the UNESCO monument and the builder,” reads the Hunedoara County Council’s announcement.

The other Dacian fortresses in Hunedoara county, namely Costesti-Blidaru, Costesti-Cetatuie and Piatra Rosie, will remain open to visitors.

Hunedoara County Council has been managing the Sarmizegetusa Regia Dacian fortress since 2013. It received it from the Ministry of Culture via a Government Emergency Ordinance.

More than 10,000 people visited the Dacian fortress in the first four months of this year, nearly 2.5 times more than in the same period last year.
