School uniforms may become mandatory in Romania
The children studying in public and private pre-school and pre-university education units in Romania may have to wear mandatory school uniforms if a recent legislative proposal submitted by several MPs will be enforced.
According to the MPs who have submitted this proposal, if the children will wear school uniforms, there will be no more situations in which “girls wearing short skirts catch the boys' attention,” reports local Mediafax.
In the explanatory memorandum, the initiators also argue that this measure’s implementation will help prevent and combat violence in schools, impose “a particular discipline, respect, and good taste,” avoid “discrimination between poor students and those from wealthy families,” and promote equal opportunities.
The uniforms’ models are to be established by the schools’ board of directors and the teachers’ council, with the parents’ consent and the consultation of students’ representatives. The families with low revenues should receive funds to buy the mandatory uniforms.
The Senate will have to give the first vote on this proposal.
