Screenplay writing popular in Romania: 262 submissions for HBO National Screenplay Competition
Romanians have been busy writing screenplays for the National Screenplay Competition run by HBO Romania, which has received 262 submissions. Most of them were for short movies – 177, some for feature length movies – 69 and a smaller number for documentaries.
Winners for each category will be announced in June, at the gala for the Transilvania Film festival (TIFF) this year, that will take place in Cluj Napoca between June 1 and 10. The cash prize for the best screenplay for a feature length movie will be USD 3,000, for a short movie, USD 1,500 and for a documentary, USD 2,000.
Established Romanian directors were among the winners of the screenplay competition in previous years: Cristian Mungiu won the first competition – now in its 12th edition- with the feature length screenplay for 'Cartier' ('Neighborhood') and Catalin Mitulescu won in 2004 with his short movie screenplay 'O zi buna de plaja' (A good day for sunbathing).
