Searches ongoing at Bucharest hospital, doctors for illegal plastic surgeries

25 April 2014

Prosecutors and the Police have started searches at the Plastic Surgery and Burn Center in Bucharest, as well as at 23 individual homes, as they are investigating 26 people, most of whom are doctors, for having allegedly performed illegal aesthetic surgeries. They are also investigated for taking bribes, giving bribes, and forgery.

Prosecutors believe those targeted by the investigation have been admitting patients into the hospital by giving fake diagnostics, and then using the hospital logistics to performer plastic surgeries, including breast enlargements, during their official work schedule.

They are also believed to have asked for bribes to perform these surgeries, as well as illegally being reimbursed money from the state on account of these surgeries based on fake diagnostics. For example, doctors would ask for some RON 5,000 for a nose job – or some EUR 1,100. Doctors are believed to have made EUR 15,000 to EUR 20,000 from these surgeries.
