Senate bans human cloning, sets punishment at up to seven years in prison

Romanian senators on Tuesday adopted a bill that bans human cloning and certain practices involving human embryos except for in vitro fertilization purposes. The bill, which bans human cloning and certain applications in biomedicine that go against human rights and human dignity, was adopted 99 to three votes and two abstentions. The bill also sets human cloning is punishable by three to seven years imprisonment while other applications of biomedicine banned by the law is punishable by six months to two years imprisonment.  The bill must be adopted by the Chamber of Deputies as well to become law.
