Sibiu Evangelical Church receives EUR 4.8 million funding for restoration
The Evangelical Church in Sibiu, in central Romania, has received a RON 21.91 million (EUR 4.8 million) financing to undergo restoration works. It is the first financing project signed as part of the 2014–2020 Regional Operational Program.
Of the total value, RON 21.47 million (EUR 4.7 million) is the non-refundable EU financing, while RON 438,000 (EUR 97,300) is the financing put up by the Sibiu Evangelical Parish, the project's beneficiary. The project is due to be finalized in October 2020.
Besides consolidation and restoration of the building and its façade, woodwork and art elements, new investments will be made in the heating and electricity systems, and the sewage will be extended. The infrastructure connected to the building, namely the Huet Square in Sibiu, will also be restored.
The restoration project is aimed both at protecting the building of the church but also at increasing the number of tourists visiting the site by 9.5% on a yearly basis. Once the project is completed, a minimum of 60 cultural events are expected to be organized in relation to the site, ranging from concerts to exhibitions of painting, photography, and sculpture.
The Evangelical Church in Sibiu was erected in the 14th century. It features a seven-level tower, which is 73 meters high.
