Sibiu Salami becomes a protected Romanian product in EU

22 February 2016

The Sibiu Salami, known as Salam de Sibiu in Romanian, has been registered as a "protected geographical indication" (PGI) product in the European Union.

It is the second Romanian product that has received this recognition after the Topoloveni Jam, known as Magiunul de Topoloveni in Romanian.

The Sibiu salami’s producers have already made plans to promote the product outside the country.

“Next year will be the year of the Romanian Sibiu Salami,” said Carmen Gavrilescu, president of the Sibiu Salami Producers Association, cited by local Economica.net.

The association brings together the most important producers of Sibiu Salami in the country. They have a share of 90% in the total production of Sibiu Salami in Romania, which is estimated at EUR 30 million.

The local producers are currently exporting the salami, but only in small amounts.
