Romania’s tennis ace Simona Halep wins Prague Open
Romanian tennis star Simona Halep, currently second in the WTA ranking of the best women's tennis players in the world, won the Prague Open tournament on Sunday, August 16. In the final, she defeated Belgian Elise Mertens 6-2, 7-5.
This is Simona Halep's 21st career trophy, and her first title on clay since the 2018 French Open, BBC reported. It is also her second title this year after she won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in February - her last tournament before the WTA Tour shutdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It was really tough to get back to official matches after such a long break," the Romanian tennis player told the press, according to Wtatennis.com.
"The emotions after staying in the room for 10 days were not easy - but you know, I have to take the positives also, I was able to win the tournament which means a lot," she added.
