Romania’s SocDems, Liberals neck and neck in European election polls
Romania’s senior ruling party, the Social Democratic Party - PSD, and the main opposition party, the National Liberal Party (PNL), are expected to get roughly the same number of votes in the elections for the European parliament (22.7% and 22.6% respectively), according to the latest poll carried by IMAS.
The coalition formed by Save Romanian Union (USR, opposition) and the party of former PM Dacian Ciolos - PLUS (opposition) comes on the third place with 17.9% of the intended vote, followed by former PM Victor Ponta’s Pro Romania party (13.4%), and junior ruling coalition party ALDE (12.5%), local Hotnews.ro reported.
As regards the voters’ preferences for the presidential elections (scheduled towards the end of this year), incumbent President Klaus Iohannis maintains his robust leading position (41.4%) while the challenger is indicated by the poll as being ALDE leader and Senate president Calin Popescu-Tariceanu with 18%, at a significant distance from Victor Ponta (15%) and Dacian Ciolos (11.7%).
