How much solar energy is needed to boil and paint Easter eggs in Romania?

05 April 2018

The boiling and painting of all the Easter eggs consumed in Romania around the holidays requires the energy produced by all the solar power plants in Romania in three days, according to energy group E.On.

In Germany, the same operation would be covered with the electricity produced by solar panels in half a day.

Statistics show that Romanians eat more eggs than Germans in a year, but the big difference mainly comes from the fact that Germany has more solar power plants than Romania.

Romanians eat on average 267 eggs per year while Germans only eat 233. Around the Easter holidays, Romanians eat on average three eggs per day, which results in a total consumption of around 60 million eggs per day.

According to E.On, it takes 0.25 kWh of energy to boil 2 liters of water needed to boil and paint 10 eggs. Thus, preparing 60 million Easter eggs require 15 million kWh, which is equal to the total production of solar power plants in Romania for three days.
