Some 400 evacuated as the attic of an apartment building catches fire in Bucharest
The attic of an apartment building in eastern Bucharest caught fire on Wednesday morning, March 9. The fire started in an attic studio and quickly spread over 1,000 sqm.
The firefighters intervened with 12 fire trucks and 4 ladders to extinguish the fire, but the intervention was very difficult because of the difficult access under the roof and the heavy smoke.
Some 400 people were evacuated from the building, five of whom needed medical care due to smoke intoxication, according to Stirileprotv.ro.
The apartment building has 200 studios. The fire broke inside an attic studio. The attic studios have been added recently on top of an older building.
The studios were entirely made of wood and drywall, and the outer insulation was made of flammable polystyrene. The materials helped the fire expand very fast.
