South-African Metair buys Romanian battery producer Rombat in EUR 43 mln deal

South-African based firm Metair International Holdings Cooperatief bought Romanian battery producer Rombat in a deal worth EUR 43 million. PwC Romania and its correspondent law firm in Romania, D&B David & Baias assisted the buyer.

Metair is the main automotive battery producer in South Africa and has stakes in several companies in the automotive sector. The South- African company has already been working with Rombat for some time.

It purchased a 90.05 percent interest in Rombat SA from Trebela Limited, Dorel Goia, Ioan Repede, members of management who are shareholders in Rombat and certain minority shareholders of Rombat, and 9.09 percent from the remaining minority shareholders.

Rombat was founded in 1980 and is the largest lead-acid battery manufacturer in Romania, producing over two million batteries a year from its factories in Bistrita. It also owns a recycling plant, which recovers lead and polypropylene.
