S&P says Romania’s rating is not affected by the presidential elections outcome

18 November 2014

Klaus Iohannis’ presidential elections victory over current Prime Minister Victor Ponta has no immediate effect on Romania’s sovereign credit ratings of BBB/Stable/A-3, with a stable outlook. However, it could bring about a period of political tensions, due to the weakening of the current coalition government, according to rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P).

"The election outcome could result in a period of protracted political wrangling - potentially arising from a weakening of the current coalition following Mr. Ponta's defeat, or a rift between the president and government," S&P said in a statement.

The agency could reassess Romania’s ratings if the country’s growth prospects are deteriorating or if there is a risk of fiscal imbalances.
