The National Company for Highways (CNADNR) will contract a study for the modernization of Romania's mountain road Transfagarasan through an open tender.

The project, which is worth EUR 680,000 (without VAT), aims to find the best ways to modernize and refurbish the road so that it will stay open all year round on the section between the Negru Peak and the Balea Cascada Cabin. The contract’s duration is of 12 months.

The Transfagarasan road was built on the orders of Communist era dictator Nicolae Ceausescu between 1970 and 1974 to ensure a military strategic route through the mountains. It includes Romania’s longest road tunnel (887 meters).

It stays open only four months a year, due to safety reasons related to the high-altitude snowfall.
