Statistics: Romania imports seven times more vegetables than it exports

Romania had seven times higher imports of vegetables than exports, and almost half of the imports were covered by tomatoes in 2011, according to statistics from the National Statistics Institute, quoted by Hotnews.ro.

For wheat, imports cover only 10 percent of the total, while for vegetables, only a third of the total sold in Romania. The biggest weight in the vegetables production in Romania in 2011 was covered by cabbages, which accounted for a third, while tomatoes had a quarter.

Romania also imports seven times more fruits than it exports. The production of grapes had the biggest weighting in the local fruit production in Romania in 2011, with more than a third, 37 percent. Apples came next, with 26 percent, and then plums, 24.3 percent. Apples accounted for half of the fruit exports

The country also imported 5.5 times more milk than it exported in 2011, while the exports of eggs dropped by 60 percent, 116 million eggs.

Meanwhile, meat exports went up, while imports dropped. Local production was mostly of pork – 46 percent, poultry – 37.3 percent, while pork also covered most of the imports – over 60 percent, with poultry covering most of the rest. Romania exported mainly poultry – over 70 percent of the meat exports, and only 12.2 percent was covered by pork.
