Strongest earthquake this year in Romania shakes capital Bucharest

An earthquake with the magnitude of 4.7 degrees on the Richter scale shook part of Romania, including the capital Bucharest, on Monday, March 16. This was the strongest earthquake felt in Romania this year.

The epicenter was at the intersection of the Buzau, Vrancea, and Covasna counties, in the Vrancea seismic area. This was a deep earthquake, at 140 kilometers below the surface, and the movement was short.

The strongest earthquake in recent years took place in Romania on November 22, 2014. That quake, which was 5.6 degrees on the Richter scale, also originated in the Vrancea area, but closer to the surface (at 40 km) and lasted longer. It was also felt quite strongly in Bucharest.
