Students in Romania return to class for a week after teachers’ strike concludes

13 June 2023

Students across Romania go back to school this week after the Government agreed to meet the requests for salary increases made by teachers. The latter, in turn, ended their strike after three weeks.

Students return to school for the final week of the 2022-2023 academic year after more than three weeks of strike, while teachers are required to finalize the necessary administrative procedures. Twelfth-graders officially ended their classes on June 2, while eighth-graders did so a week later. They are now preparing for graduation exams.

The twelfth-grade students were supposed to start their oral exams this week. However, due to the protest, these exams will be replaced by the students' average grades, while the written exams will begin on June 26. Eighth-grade students will take their exams on the originally scheduled dates, June 19 and 21, according to G4Media.

The end of the strike did not satisfy everyone. Many union members in the education system wanted the protest to continue, expressing their dissatisfaction with the negotiation. After the union leaders announced the end of the labor conflict, there were discussions of betrayal, and some complained about not being consulted.

In Iași, union members were consulted once again on Monday evening, after the education federations had already announced the discontinuation of the protest. After the votes were cast, it turned out that only 35% of the union members still supported the general strike. Consequently, the Free Union of Preuniversity Education (USLIP) Iași also announced the end of the strike.
