Students want 24/7 service for Bucharest subway

04 May 2017

Several student and youth organisations in Romania have asked the Transport Ministry and the Bucharest metro operator Metrorex to extend its operating program to a 24/7 service.

The Bucharest metro currently operates between 5am and 11pm.

The National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania (ANOSR) has come up with this initiative, with the support of other student and youth organisation, reports local Mediafax.

The current subway schedule limits the possibilities of students and young people to take part in social and cultural events, according to the organisations behind the initiative. They added that the current schedule of the Bucharest subway also affects tourists.

Extending the operating program of Metrorex to a 24/7 service would also bring economic benefits to the company. Moreover, such a measure would prove “social responsibility”, students explained.

Over 600,000 people use the subway in Bucharest every day. Almost 175 million people took the subway in 2015, or an average of 15 million per month.
