Study: Bread, vegetables and fruits, most popular among Romanians

07 May 2014

Bread, vegetables and fruits are the products most commonly found in Romanians' shopping carts, a recent GfK survey revealed.

Fresh food products are present in two out of three shopping carts, representing almost 40 percent of Romanians’ total household consumption expenditure for consumer goods.

Over a year, Romanians spend the most money on meat, vegetables and cold cuts, according to GfK’s study.

Traditional retail outlets are Romanians' favorite places for buying fresh food products. Most of the products such as vegetables, bread and fish are purchased from specialized stores - bakeries or markets.

On the other hand, cold cuts and poultry are almost equally purchased from traditional and modern retail formats.

In the case of modern retail, “about three quarters of shoppers entering a hypermarket put vegetables and fruits in the shopping cart, compared to 60 percent of the clients of supermarkets and discount stores,” said Raluca Raschip, Consumer Goods &Retail Director GfK Romania.

Present of the local market since 1992, GfK Romania had a turnover of some EUR 12.5 million in 2012.
