Study finds 1 million Romanians in rural areas interested in housing bank services

12 July 2011

Housing bank BCR Banca pentru Locuinţe found that over 1 million Romanians in the rural area are interested in the saving-lending system for housing. “Even during the current economic conditions, most of Romanians in rural areas intend to save money in the next 12 months – 71 percent. […] On an average, around 1 million people aged between 20 and 65 are interested in contracting a Bauspar product. We believe the rural area represents an opportunity to distribute banking product and services, given that only 36 percent of the respondents use banking products for saving money,” said Alexandru Ciobanu, president of BCR Banca pentru Locuinţe.

Around 80 percent of the people in rural areas plan to improve their house in the next five years, through renovation, major repairing or the acquisition of new appliances. Very few want to buy a new house or a piece of land, according to BCR Banca pentru Locuinte. The study was conducted by IRSOP on a sample of 214 households in rural areas.

The products of a housing bank combine savings with loans and a 25 percent bonus from the state, all for housing acquisitions or repairs. BCR Banca pentru Locuinte shares the Romanian market with Raiffeisen Banca pentru Locuinte.
