Tax authority official in Romania arrested on corruption charges

Romanian tax authority ANAF official Nicolae Adrian Gavrila and lawyer Marius Stancescu on Wednesday were placed under arrest for 29 days on charges of corruption. The Bucharest Court of Appeals upheld anticorruption prosecutors' request to issue a 29-day preventive arrest warrant against Gavrila and Stancescu on charges of influence peddling.

Gavrila is accused of having requested bribes (EUR 120,000 in 2007, EUR 400,000 in 2008 and EUR 200,000 in 2010) in order to use his influence over ANAF and National Customs Administration authorities to allow illegal acts.   Stancescu is accused of requesting bribes to use his influence over Financial Guard officials to turn a blind eye to tax evasion and smuggling.
