15 July 2013

Romania's team of four brought home four medals from the recently finalized Informatics Olympiad in Brisbane, Australia, two of which were gold medals. Rareş Darius Buhai (in picture), a tenth grader from Bistrita, won the gold, similarly to last year. Vlad Alexandru Gavrilă, a final year high school student from Bucharest also won a gold medal, while Andrei Heidelbacher from Timisoara got the silver, and Mihai Popa in Craiova, the bronze medal.

In the unofficial country ranking, Romania came fifth, after China, Russia, South Korea and the US. The four Romanians were against 300 other competitors from over 80 countries between July 6 and 12.

The two Romanians who got gold medals were among the 25 winners of gold at the Olympiad. Two Chinese competitors and a Russian got the first three places in the gold ranking, with scores of 569, 557 and 555 respectively. Romania's Buhai came 19th, and Gavrilă, 22nd. In total 147 competitors went home with medals. The final results are here.

In one of the exam sessions, contestants had to attempt the tasks at hand by creating a program that solves the problem as effectively as possible.

Back to Romania, when interviewed by local media, some of the Romanian winners in the Olympiad said they plan to study abroad, but others were planning to do MSc programs abroad, after their university studies in Romania.
