Temporary layoff for 3,000 miners in Romania
Almost 3,000 miners working for the thermal electricity producer Complexul Energetic Oltenia will enter temporary unemployment in the coming period.
The management has decided to take this measure as the company has a large stocks of coal, of over 1.6 million tonnes, which it couldn’t sell, reports local Digi24.
The miners will stay in temporary unemployment for a week, between July 6 and 10. During this period, they will receive 75% of their salaries.
Complexul Energetic Oltenia has recently terminated the coal supply contract with a Constanta-based company, which resold the coal in Serbia. The Romanian thermal electricity producer should have provided 1.2 million tonnes of coal, according to the contract. The Serbs, however, only wanted to buy some 400,000 tonnes.
Complexul Energetic Oltenia is a state-owned company. It had losses of EUR 155 million and a turnover of EUR 572 million, in 2014. The company has over 18,000 employees.
