"The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu", awarded at U.S. Cinema Eye Honors

24 January 2011

The documentary "The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu, produced by Andrei Ujica, has won the Spotlight section at the Cinema Eye Honors, one of the most important categories of awards granted to non-fiction films. Dedicated to films that deserve more promotion in the United States, Spotlight is the only category that takes into account films that have not yet been distributed overseas.

"Next year, 'Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu' could become eligible in the other sections - the best non-fiction film, directing, editing, etc.. - if it will be distributed in U. S. cinemas", according to film promoters.

Cinema Eye Honors Annual Gala was held at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. In October 2010, Ujica's film won the grand prize in the documentary section of the 11th International Film Festival in Bergen, Norway.

Designed as an essay, without voice-over or off comments, from over 1,000 hours of images from the National Film Archive and the Romanian Television, the film covers 25 years of the dictator’s life who lost power on 22 December 1989.

The film had its world premiere at the 2010 edition of International Film Festival in Cannes, after which it was presented last fall at festivals in Toronto, San Sebastian, New York, Vancouver and London.

The film staff includes, besides the director Andrei Ujica, Velvet Moraru - producer, Dana Bunescu (editing and sound design), Titus Muntean (archival research), Vivi Dragan Vasile (visual consultant) and Robert Raduca (colorist) .
