The European People’s Party wins most seats in the new EU Parliament, but nationalists are on the rise

The European People’s Party (EPP) got the most votes in this year’s European Parliamentary elections, some 28.2 percent, according to the first estimates. This will give the EPP 212 seats in the new European Parliament, 62 less than it got in 2009.

The Socialists and Democrats (S&D) won 24.8 percent of the votes and will have 186 seats. The S&D lost 10 seats. The Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) got 9.3 percent of the votes, which gives them 70 seats, 13 less than in 2009.

However, the reals winners of this year’s EU Parliament elections are the nationalist parties. In France, the National Front, led by Marie Le Pen got the most votes, while in Great Britain the UK Independence Party (UKIP) won the elections.
