The protests that shake Romania! More people are expected to join tonight
Some 25,000 people went to the streets in downtown Bucharest on Tuesday night to protest against the Government and the corrupt political class in Romania whose recklessness and incapacity have led to the tragedy in Colectiv club on Friday.
About 10,000 people left the meeting place in University Square and went to the Government’s building in Victory Square to ask for Prime Minister Victor Ponta’s resignation, which came early on Wednesday morning. They then went to the Interior Ministry, and to the Parliament’s Palace to continue their peaceful protests.
The events on Tuesday night produced a stronger than expected shock in Romania’s society. Victor Ponta’s resignation showed the power of this peaceful protest, which was led not by unions and politicians like before, but was a spontaneous manifestation of the people’s grief and frustration with the corrupt system that runs Romania.
Despite the politicians’ attempts to appease the crowds by sacrificing the Prime Minister, it is likely that the movement will only grow, as calls to action have been pouring in social media all throughout the day. Over 10,000 people have announced they would rally this evening in Bucharest’s University square while thousands other are mobilising for protests in Romania’s big cities, according to Hotnews.ro.
Student organizations are calling their colleagues to the streets in the following days to continue the protests. „A few resignations don’t solve the system’s underlying problems, which have cost innocent lives,” is what many of the protesters believe.
Comment: No, Mr. Ponta, your resignation is not enough!
