About 59% of the calls made last year at the emergency number 112 in Romania were false, according to a statistics of the Special Telecommunications Service (STS), which manages the emergency call service.

In total, some 14.6 million calls were made at this number last year, 8.5 million of which were false.

Most of the emergencies were transferred to the Ambulance (3.7 million cases), Police (1.3 million cases), SMURD (933,000), and Gendarmerie (184,600). Most false calls as a percentage of the total number of calls per county were recorded in the Covasna, Mures, and Gorj counties. The average response time is 3.94 second, similar to the EU level.

STS is an organization with a military status that coordinates special communications activities for state institutions such as the Presidency and the Government, among others.
