28 April 2014

Vitalie Stan, the manager of the Burn Center in Bucharest, together with two other doctors from the same medical unit were taken into preventive custody in a case involving illegal plastic surgeries, according to a decision by the Bucharest Court on Sunday.

The two other doctors arrested together with the manager are the chief of the plastic surgery - Nicolae Antohi and Doctor Elena Cristina Isac.

Other doctors from the Burn Center are also being investigated in this case.

The court’s decision is not final and can be appealed at the Bucharest Court of Appeal.

Nine doctors from the Burn Unit and an employee of a private clinic were taken by prosecutors on Friday (April 25), after searches and questioning.

Prosecutors believe those targeted by the investigation have been admitting patients into the hospital by giving fake diagnostics, and then using the hospital logistics to performer plastic surgeries, including breast enlargements, during their official work schedule.

They are also believed to have asked for bribes to perform these surgeries. On top of this, surgeons were reimbursed money from the government for the operations, performed under false diagnoses.
