04 May 2011

Three Romanian high school students will participate in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a contest that will take place next week in Los Angeles, between May 8 and 13. Their projects consist in a simplified facial recognition system and a method to control the mosquito population through biological methods.

Intel ISEF is the largest scientific competition dedicated to young researchers, Romania being present for the the third consecutive year. If the three projects will be rewarded by the jury, the students can receive up to USD 75,000- the big prize.

One of the competitors is Ionut Alexandru Budisteanu, who last year ranked the fourth in the "computer science" section of the competition. The other two participants are Emilia Nicoleta Ion and Dragos Stefan Gherghescu. Their proposed project involves mosquito population controlled through biological methods.

Last year, another Romanian student, Paul Sucala, took the first prize in the category "Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Controls" and was awarded USD 3,000. Paul has developed an affordable driver assistance system that prevents accidents.
